Gulf of Mexico
FYI, the Library of Congress has put out this month's list of proposed changes to catalog subject headings.
The vast majority of them are headings where "Mexico, Gulf of" would be changed to "America, Gulf of."
Detour--what are subject headings?
Subject headings are the terms used in a library catalog to describe what a book, or other item, is about. They are chosen from a what's called a "controlled vocabulary," so that the same terminology is used consistently across items with the same topic--so you don't get, for instance, How To Ride Horses listed under "Horses, riding of," and All About Horseback Riding under "Riding, horseback." Once you know the headings for your topic, you can search those headings and be sure that you're finding everything.
It's tag wrangling, basically.
Okay--why is this important?
Most libraries in the United States use the controlled vocabulary put out by the Library of Congress--and so do a lot of libraries outside the US.
LoC making this change doesn't necessarily mean that every library that uses their system will have to follow suit--but in a lot of cases, they'll have to put in extra work to keep it from being changed through automatic system updates. More importantly, each library will have to devote time and resources to deciding what they want to do about this. (Plus, of course, changing it all back again in about four years.)
That kind of sucks. Anything we can do?
They are accepting comments on these proposed changes through midnight, tonight, February 18, 2025. If you want to comment, send an email to [email protected]
It's not a long comment period; I'm not sure how they usually do it, but folks on one of the cataloging listservs are expressing surprise at how little time there is. However, they are at least keeping to their usual process of publishing the proposed changes and taking comments before they actually do it.
Anyway, if you decide to comment, keep it professional; be aware that this is being driven by political pressure, not the person who will be reading your email.

The master’s program I’m applying for: “What’s this? You’re applying for our master’s program? And you already have a bachelor’s degree in writing? Hmm, very good! Now write us a 1000 word essay. How are we supposed to know that you can write? A 4-year degree tells us nothing!”
#I’m aware I’m being huffy for no reason lol#it’s just. I get wanting an application essay for a bachelor’s. but for a master’s#program?? really??? and for LIBRARY SCIENCE??? siiiggghhh I’m aware there’s probably a reason for this#I just hate essays

drawings of The Man from my sketchbook last year that make me laugh.
Wanted to try drawing a potential younger and more clean-cut (out of school and pre-[REDACTED]) Jamfoot in my style and... the other one was a very quick scribble from when people were talking about manes and dewlaps ahsgsgs
#sizab's art#sizzy scribbles#alegander jamfoot#bugsnax#“why 30s?” got in my head that it was a master's degree and forgot you can just get a bachelor's in library sciences
